Rubbery or Cloudy Melt & Pour? What Makers Ask Online
Makers often post: “My melt & pour turned rubbery” or “it went cloudy after I melted it.” These issues are extremely common in social media tutorials and comment threads.
Rubbery texture
Overheating is the usual cause. Holding the melt too hot for too long can drive off water and change how the base sets. For Kosmos bases we recommend working around 75–80 °C. Bases are formulated for good colour stability under elevated melt temperatures. Prefer a water bath or short microwave bursts with stirring.
Cloudiness
Air bubbles, aggressive stirring, steam dripping into the pot, or some fragrances and additives can reduce clarity. Stir slowly. A light mist of isopropyl alcohol on the surface after pouring can help collapse bubbles. Always trial new fragrance oils at small scale — some oils can cloud or seize a base.
Practical checklist
- Cut into even 1–2 cm cubes before melting.
- Melt gently; do not boil the base.
- Add colour, then fragrance; mix slowly.
- Pour, optional alcohol mist, cool at room temperature.
