Why Handmade Soap Gets Soft (And What Hardness Changes)
Retail customers and small brands often ask online: “Why does my handmade soap get soft so fast?” or “The bar doesn’t last.”
Base hardness matters
Very soft, high-humectant melt & pour can feel luxurious in the mould but mush under a wet soap dish. Hardness-optimised bases cut cleaner, hold shape better and tend to be more durable in daily use.
What else affects durability
- Too much liquid additive (milk, purees, high fragrance load) can soften the bar.
- Soap dishes that hold water under the bar accelerate wear.
- Low volume/weight shrinkage helps the finished bar keep substance over time.
Kosmos bases are positioned for high hardness, low shrinkage and longer-lasting bars, with rich creamy foam and a comfortable (not tight) wash feel on standard grades. The SLS-Free transparent grade is the option when gentler, lower-irritation skin feel is the priority.
